  8.  AB    Case-based reasoning (CBR) is the problem-solving paradigm where past
  9.        experiences are used to guide problem-solving. In CBR, cases similar to
  10.        the current problem are retrieved from the case memory, the best match
  11.        is selected from those retrieved and adapted to fit the current problem.
  12.        In AIDS Initial Assessment (AIA), AIDS Intervention and Prevention (AIP)
  13.        specialists often screen AIDS-risky behaviors by relating the current
  14.        subject to the previous screening cases. This paper describes a
  15.        prototype CBR system for AIA. The advantages of the system are: (i) the
  16.        CBR approach better matches the thought processes in which AIP
  17.        specialists administering AIA screening; AIDS-risky behavior can now be
  18.        screened by retrieving case(s) stored in the case memory; (ii)
  19.        successfully adapted cases are stored so they can be retrieved and
  20.        reused in the future; (iii) cases can be used to train AIP
  21.        professionals. When an entry-level AIA specialist joins an AIP program,
  22.        an important part of his/her training involves going through those
  23.        previous cases in the case memory. In summary, AIA has proved to be an
  24.        attractive subject for CBR systems.
